Air Waybill (AWB)
An Air Waybill (AWB) is a legal document produced by an airline or freight forwarder that serves as a contract of carriage for air cargo. It contains essential shipment details such as the consignor (shipper), consignee (receiver), origin, destination, cargo description, and freight rates. Unlike a Bill of Lading, an AWB is not negotiable, which means it does not transfer ownership of the goods. However, it serves as a delivery receipt, a tracking document, and a customs clearance reference.
AWBs can be issued on paper or electronically (e-AWB). The computerized version streamlines paperwork, increases productivity, and improves tracking, making it easier for logistics companies to manage international air cargo. AWBs serve an essential role in the global supply chain by ensuring the smooth movement of goods, transparency, and adherence to international shipping standards.
