Ocean Freight Consolidation
Ocean freight consolidation is a logistical method that combines several small shipments from different shippers into a single full-container load (FCL). This strategy enables enterprises that carry less-than-container-load (LCL) freight to share space and prices in a container, making international shipping more accessible and economical. Rather than overpaying for a complete container, each shipper is charged according to the amount or weight of their unique goods.
This method can be implemented by freight forwarders or consolidators, who collect shipments at a container freight station (CFS), consolidate them into a single container, and send them using a single master bill of lading. When the container arrives at the target port, it is deconsolidated, and each consignment is transferred to its intended receiver. Ocean freight consolidation not only lowers transportation costs but also optimizes container space usage, decreases carbon emissions, and streamlines customs procedures by lowering the number of separate filings.
